August 5, 2008 - Neighborhood Night Out

This is the night when neighbors join with neighbors to have a block party. It's also a good time to update your block's emergency preparedness plan. If you would like to register your block party with the City or learn more about how to cordon off your residential street that evening, visit the City of Seattle's Night Out web page.

Got extra fruit on your trees? Consider a donation to the Lake City Food Bank!

Please consider making a donation of food, cash, or volunteer hours to the North Helpline, the food bank in Lake City that serves our area of North Seattle. If you have fruit trees with extra produce, consider donating it to the food bank. They even have pickers who will come and pick the fruit for you; all you have to do is ask!

As you may have heard in the news, food banks everywhere are struggling to meet the recent, increased demand for food. The food bank for our area currently serves approximately 1,000 households. Nearly 50% of these are seniors on fixed incomes, approximately 15% are homeless, and the remaining 35% are folks who are experiencing medical bills or loss of a job.

If you know someone facing an unexpected medical bill or job loss, encourage them not to wait before using the food bank - too often, staff at the food bank say, folks default on utility bills, rent, or mortgage in order to keep feeding themselves and their families. Better to use the food bank as soon as possible and use the money saved to keep the power on and the rent paid.

Let's make our community stronger and help each other through hard times!
